The Foreign Language Program (FLP) at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) offers comprehensive courses in various foreign languages, aiming to equip participants with linguistic skills and cultural understanding. Languages Offered

The Foreign Language Program at IIT Kanpur currently offers courses in French, German, and Japanese. These languages are selected for their global relevance and cultural richness. Each course is designed to build fundamental language skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking-while also introducing learners to the cultural and social contexts of the respective regions. Whether you're a student, researcher, or professional, these programs provide a valuable opportunity to enhance your global competence and communication skills.

French Language

FRENCH is spoken in many countries - not just in France! It is the official language in Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, Seychelles, Morocco, Ivory Coast - to name just a few. In fact, it is the only language spoken on all five continents.
The French are very proud of their language and will immediately warm to you if you speak it - even if you make a few mistakes. Since there are no hard consonants in the French language, it is easy on the ear. It is a language of precision and musicality.
At IIT Kanpur, we have a small French library which houses books, magazines, comics (yes, you can read "Tintin" and "Asterix" in French !) and CDs.
Our aim is to teach you how to read, write and speak French. It is a language that will open up a host of opportunities - in the tourism industry, hotel management, airlines, international banks, Indo-French collaborations, teaching..... It will help you enjoy French literature and cinema, understand research papers in Mathematics. MBR

German Language

Germany, positioned at the heart of Europe, is a confluence of science, art and philosophy. Additionally, the Germans are known for their discipline, punctuality and precision. Germany has always been known for its engineering precision and technological wizardry. Benz, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Siemens and many more have made Germany the largest economy in all of Europe. In today’s socio-political landscape, Germany is proving to be a major stabilizing force; with a sensitive heart towards humanitarian and environmental causes.
About 33% population of the European Union speaks German, including countries like Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, where it is the official language.
It is therefore not surprising that the German language is one of the most fervently taught languages in the world today. Although misconstrued as a tough and hard-to-pronounce language, it is in fact a rather melodious one, with clear and strong intonations.
You will learn the basics of the language along with songs, short films, group activities etc. Some interesting facts about Germany, Switzerland and Austria makes the learning enjoyable.

Japanese Language

The Japanese language program is tailored for individuals interested in Japan’s unique blend of ancient tradition and cutting-edge technology. With Japan being a global leader in innovation and manufacturing, knowledge of Japanese can offer a competitive edge in sectors like engineering, electronics, and business. The course covers essential language elements such as Hiragana, Katakana, basic Kanji, sentence structure, and conversational skills. Alongside language acquisition, learners also get an insight into Japanese culture, customs, and work ethics. The interactive and systematic teaching methodology makes this course suitable for beginners as well as enthusiasts planning to travel, study, or work in Japan.

Who Can Join This Language Course?

Anyone who has completed Class 10th or higher can enroll. No prior experience is required for Level 1 courses. For Level 2, completion of Level 1 from IIT Kanpur is mandatory.

What’s The Duration And Class Schedule?

Each language course runs for 8 months, with classes held online every evening for 1 hour, depending on the batch schedule.

Is The Course Fully Online Only?

All courses are conducted online. There is no need to visit the IIT Kanpur campus. Live sessions are held via virtual platforms.

Are Recorded Sessions Made Available Later?

No, recorded sessions will not be provided. Regular attendance is encouraged to get the most out of the course.

How Is The Admission Process Conducted?

Seats are limited and admission is strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis. We recommend registering early to secure your spot.

Do Participants Receive A Completion Certificate?

Yes, participants who meet the attendance and performance criteria will be awarded a certificate of completion from the Office of Outreach Activities, IIT Kanpur.
