Kanpur, 5 April 2025| The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has inaugurated a state-of-the-art EMI/EMC (Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility) and Electrical Safety Test Facility, further strengthening India's testing infrastructure for electrical and medical devices. The facility was inaugurated by Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, and Dr. Raj K Shirumalla, Mission Director, National Biopharma Mission, Department of Biotechnology, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). Speaking at the event, Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur emphasized the significance of external accreditation for testing laboratories and the critical role EMC testing plays in ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical and medical devices. He stated, "The launch of this NABL-accredited facility at IIT Kanpur marks another significant step towards enhancing India’s capabilities in EMI/EMC and electrical safety testing. This facility will serve as a valuable resource for industries and startups, enabling them to develop world-class, safe, and reliable electronic and medical devices." Dr. Raj K Shirumalla highlighted the importance of EMC testing in the medical device sector and its relevance to the National Biopharma Mission’s goal of promoting the design and manufacturing of MedTech devices in India. He remarked, "With the rapid growth of India's MedTech sector, ensuring compliance with global safety and performance standards is crucial. This facility at IIT Kanpur will play a pivotal role in supporting innovation and accelerating the development of high-quality, safe medical devices in the country." The inauguration was attended by key dignitaries, including Prof. Braj Bhushan, Deputy Director; Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development; and Prof. Yogesh Chauhan, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. Other distinguished guests included Dr. Pooja Tanwar, Programme Manager, BIRAC; Dr. D. C. Pande; and Shri M. G. Sathyendra. Accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), the facility is primarily funded by BIRAC under the National Biopharma Mission. It is fully equipped to conduct comprehensive EMI/EMC and electrical safety tests, including pre-compliance and compliance testing of a range of electrical and electronic devices, particularly medical devices. The facility adheres to internationally recognized standards such as IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IEC 61000-4-3, IEC 61000-4-6, IEC 61010-1, CISPR 11, CISPR 14, CISPR 15, CISPR 32, and CISPR 35. Currently, there are limited accredited EMI/EMC and electrical safety testing facilities in the region, particularly for medical devices. The establishment of this facility at IIT Kanpur will provide affordable testing solutions for electrical and electronic devices, benefiting startups and enterprises engaged in developing high-quality products in this domain.
